Rising to the Occasion

Posted on Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

To think the Panama Canal was excavated, constructed, engineered without the use of modern equipment… No heavy earth movers, no steam shovels, just man power. The Gaillard Cut, which represents 15% of the waterwayʼs total length, necessitated the excavation of enough material to have built 63 pyramids, similar to those found in Egypt. First the ship had to be raised from sea level on the Caribbean Sea 27 feet to Gatun Lake. Then had to be lowered on the other end via two locks to the sea level of the Pacific Ocean. It was an all day affair, and was reported to cost around $337,000 for the passage.
The picture shows a freighter being elevated in the canal next to our ship. We followed soon thereafter.

Out to Sea

Life aboard this beautiful new ship is delightful. The food has been outstanding, especially the pastries. I will probably “outgrow” my entire wardrobe. It is wonderful so far. I highly recommend the Queen Elizabeth to one and all.

Our first port of call was Curacao. The architecture is definitely Dutch, but the colors of the buildings is Caribbean. The people are friendly and love our dollars! It was hot and humid…a great contrast to the weather I left behind in Augusta.

Today found us in Limon, Costa Rica, and early tomorrow we start out transit of the Panama Canal. I hope to get some good photographs of the new construction.

More later.

European Travel

Posted on Monday, January 17th, 2011

Thank you for planning the amazing trip that my son and I took to Paris and London in mid-September. Every aspect of the trip was so nice – the weather, the people, transportation, accommodations, food, etc. All were conducive to a lovely vacation with my son. I hope I’ll always have in my mind these vivid memories of my first trip to Europe! (And of course we have many pictures!)

Thank you for the huge part you played in making it great!

Cruise through the Panama Canal

Posted on Monday, January 17th, 2011

We would like to recommend Southern Travel Agency in Augusta, GA. Our representative Jane, was especially helpful in arranging a cruise from Los Angeles to Ft. Lauderdale through the Panama Canal in March of 2010. She provided us with excellent comparisons of available cruises so we could decide which best fit our needs.

Due to complications from knee replacement surgery, I am not able to walk long distances. Jane was most helpful in arranging for a handicapped accessible cabin. She also suggested a company where we were able to rent a motorized scooter. I was surprised to learn that they would put the scooter in our cabin in Los Angeles and we could leave it in the cabin when we reached Ft. Lauderdale.

Jane was also very knowledgeable and helpful when we were planning our side trip excursions.

We will surely use Southern Travel Agency and Jane to arrange our next cruise.

Honeymoon Travel

Posted on Monday, January 17th, 2011

We have been using Southern Travel for years and they’ve booked numerous trips for us (including all three of my children’s honeymoons). Mike and the staff are great. They have lots of experience, so they can help you plan a fabulous trip while getting the most for your dollar. And when the airlines change flights or the unexpected comes up, they are just a phone call away and take care of everything. I highly recommend Southern Travel.

Mediterranean Cruise

Posted on Monday, January 17th, 2011

Jane helped us extensively with our plans for a July 2010 vacation. Our trip lasted 25 days and included a Mediterranean cruise on the Celebrity Equinox and several additional days in Rome and Germany. There were no glitches with any of the arrangements and the trip was everything we hoped for. Jane made everything very easy.

Honeymoon Trip to Hawaii

Posted on Monday, January 17th, 2011

I have used Southern Travel Agency to plan several trips for me and my family, including two that were very special. One was a family cruise for 13 people to the Caribbean, and the other was a honeymoon trip to Hawaii. Our travel consultant was Jane who did an outstanding job in planning both trips. Jane was very professional and arranged every detail including air transportation, rental car, hotels, cruise line and travel insurance.

I highly recommend Southern Travel Agency to plan your next rip. I certainly plan to use them for mine.
